xanax poem

acid-jazz:

as the darkness seeped in,

i whispered to myself that it would all be okay.

the shark-skinned brothers danced around me

 like a demented little freakshow.

i cried out for help

                but no one would listen.

they screamed out my name

and i tried to scream back.

red cliffs burned like a sacrificial hearth.

         blazing smokestacks and blackened pipelines.

i wake up to the steady drumbeats of my heart.

the woman in white stands at the doorway.

she asks if i’m ready to confess..

                                      no.

                                                of course i’m not.

but i do, so that the shark-skinned brothers don’t visit me again.

                                  and i’m send to my grave

                                                 for those crimes

                                                          i never did.

"Imagine all motion sickness
of standing still.
Imagine a circuit breaker shorting
from the back of your brain;
the fork to the toaster,
the copper lining of your veins.

I threw up in the storm drain
at the street fair
and blamed it on bad nectarines;
shivered in the bend of your arms
like a loose wire.

Stevie Nicks has said this
was the pill that almost did her in;
the one that brought hell to her heels,
and I can feel the fire unwrap the framework
of my spine.
I have never lived through a sickness
that made me more afraid of my mind
by the havoc of my body."
